Turkey seasons are in the stretch run now in Louisiana and neighboring states.
Turkey hunters have reported pretty good success so far after a slow start. Mississippi hunters got off to a slow start because of cold weather, but the turkeys are gobbling and getting away from the hens a bit now. We have heard of lots of good hunts over there.
As I mentioned earlier, Texas has had some excellent turkey hunting, which is not anything unusual. There are also lots of good birds being taken in Louisiana as well. Rising waters are flooding thousands of acres of bottomland and affecting turkey movements in some areas. Turkey season in Area C closes Sunday, but Area A is open through April 26 and Area B through April 19. Those are the two largest hours in the state. Always check regulations in the official pamphlet before going!
From now to the end of April is the time to get after them. The hens are on the nests a bit and the gobblers should be easier to kill. You won’t know unless you try.
And whatever you do, be safe out there.
