Day 60: Sun sets on duck season

IMG_0379-1It’s hard to believe duck season is over, but Sunday is the final day. The sun has set on another Louisiana duck season. We ended it with an afternoon hunt, but didn’t see a lot of ducks. Three of us killed seven ducks — four gadwalls and three pintails.

We ended the afternoon when a lone specklebelly flew by about 300 yards away about 30 minutes before the end of legal shooting hours. It finally heard me calling and turned and headed right into the decoys. We got the goose and called it quits for the year.

I am always glad to see duck season get here and on days like today, I’m kinda glad to see it go. I’ve hunted about 50 days and had some really good hunts. Today wasn’t that great, but after yesterday’s hunt (see below), it was a good way to end the year. We’ll have a season wrapup and announce our Duck Report grand prize winner here tomorrow.

IMG_0366Two quick notes:

1. There is a special Youth Hunt Saturday, Jan. 31, in the East Zone only. If you plan on taking a youngster, make sure you read and understand the rules & regulations around the youth hunts. Goose season is also still underway. Check the regs for various types of geese and areas there as well.

2. We will be drawing for the grand prize $100 Simmons’ Gift Certificate. Don’t forget to check this site tomorrow. It could be YOU!  Thanks for reading the Duck Report and we hope it has been both fun and informative. And as always, stop by Simmons’ Sporting Goods for all your outdoor needs. If we don’t have it, we’ll try and get it for you. You can also shop conveniently on line.   PS– You have until midnight tonight to enter the contest by clicking on the WIN PRIZES box at the right of this page.
