Day 18: Hope in the air

Screen Shot 2015-12-20 at 7.28.04 PMWe saw a lot of ducks flying today and four of us got 18 this morning. We could have gotten more, but there was no wind and it was so still early this morning that the ducks just wouldn’t work. They would lock up, circle and then just slowly drift off from the still decoys. Then the wind finally picked up about 8 a.m., but the clear skies were gone and it had already gotten gray and the same thing happened.

Screen Shot 2015-12-20 at 7.27.33 PMI’m encouraged because I saw more ducks than I’ve seen since the season first opened. A lot of folks wereScreen Shot 2015-12-20 at 7.27.49 PM seeing good numbers of ducks, but some still weren’t. That’s just the way it is.

The good news is that the ducks we killed were all mallards, gadwalls and pintails. We saw lots of big ducks. One thing I don’t understand is where the teal are. This warm weather I would expect more, but I bet we didn’t see five teal this morning. At least 75% of the ducks were gadwalls.

The weather is about to throw us another curve, but I don’t think it will be severe enough to move the ducks we’ve got. Hopefully some more will be moving our way.

Be safe out there.
