We didn’t exactly set the house afire, but we killed 16 today. They were mostly big ducks, pintails, mallards and gadwalls with some teal. We got one speck. It was a good morning.
We saw a lot of ducks and I stayed on the call most of the morning from daylight until 10:30. It was that steady. They just kept coming, but most of them would circle a few times and head off. They just wouldn’t work.
The good news is that we saw a lot of ducks flying. I think what happened to us is that about 3/4 of a mile from us there was a lot of shallow backwater and it had probably 2,000 ducks on it. The ducks would fly over us and see our 150 decoys, then see that big wad of live ducks. There’s no doubt where they headed.
Some smaller wads would get up and fly over our way, but then they would head back to the big bunch of ducks. I was encouraged by what I saw today. That backwater will drain off and maybe the ducks will come our way better.
We scratched out a good hunt, but we had to stay late in the morning. It’s the first time in a long time that I can say I saw some ducks. And that’s a good thing.
