Louisiana’s special teal season opened this past weekend. There hadn’t been many birds a week before, but the cold front that came through the area brought in some good shooting this weekend. The biggest key was water. Areas that had plenty of water had bunches of teal. In our area, hunting has been good in the fields that are flooded, some larger reservoirs and Wham Brake and to the south in Catahoula Lake.

Teal season is opened statewide Sept. 13-28.  Check back here for the latest updates.

Here’s the take  on opening weekend from Larry Reynolds, the state waterfowl leader for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries:

“I got mixed reports from northeast teal hunters ranging from easy limits to not firing a shot.  A few locations that had fair number of birds going into the weekend reported a big loss of birds, presumably from north winds and cool weather.  I heard a number of reports from hunters that didn’t see anything for the first hour and then killed a fair number of birds in the next couple, suggesting birds were redistributing due to hunting pressure or weather.   I would expect the opener in northeast was mediocre, but that is based on a small number of reports.”
